Effectiveness of trapping

Thanks for the feedback, glad it worked

We purchased a 117 acre property 10 years ago with every pest and weed known to man. Shooting, traps, (including recently smart traps that send an email when they trigger) and poison. Now the weeds are mostly non existent and have 25 acres planted in native trees. Hare’s and rabbits have been shot out, Possums have been shot and trapped, Rats and Mice have been poisoned and trapped, wild cats have been shot and trapped, stoats, ferrets and weasels trapped. Yes we still have incursion from neighbouring properties but even this is mightily reduced. First shoot was 65 animals and to my surprise about half were Hare’s. Currently we might get 2 Hare’s in 2 months. Possums 1 a month. Rats and mice now take little poison and only occasionally are trapped. Cats, stoats, Ferrets and Weasels only occasionally caught though they were only ever occasionally caught. We use kill traps, Smart cages and poison with poison sitting alongside the traps. Inside the traps is an egg, beef lard and egg based mayonnaise. Ferrets have only been caught in cage traps while Stoats and Weasels have only been caught in kill traps. PJ

“Interesting, well done! I am in the same situation, but our pest influx keeps coming unabated. Since I can’t find any lard, I use drippings from the supermarket. Do you think that will work? My mayonnaise has gone moldy after one week in the field. This is in the Auckland area. I am impressed with your results.”

We live in Tuakau South of Auckland and have not had trouble with Kewpie egg based Mayonnaise going mouldy but mostly the mayonnaise is used in the SMART CAGES where a very small amount is emitted every day automatically from a syringe. We are fortunate in that one neighbour is also very pest conscious but unfortunate that 6 other neighbours are not. Persistence over the years has reduced incursion dramatically.
