Add "Spectator" as a membership option

Adding someone as a member to our project and think Advanced Trapper was the appropriate role for them.

But, it would be nice to have another role, similar to Advanced Trapper where they can read all the information about the project and look at monthly catches etc but not able to add or edit anything. The person I’ve just added is one of our funders, so they’re only involved in the admin side of things and won’t actually be in the field.

Good idea, I have a couple of members that would suit a role like that.

Kia ora Jade,

Would public facing reports suffice for this purpose, such as the hex maps as a starting point?

Rather than a new user type, better public maps might cover some of the needs. There are security concerns around device locations so public reporting needs to be limited but could certainly provide more options than we do now.

If it were a new user type, how about a ‘Limited Reports Viewer’? No access to trapper details or other sensitive data.

The trapper role, if the at could add “own” traps that would also be handy.

I was quite disconcerted/confused when I suddenly noticed all our previous “readonly” people had suddenly changed to “Advanced Trapper”.

We trap in an area that includes land that DOC have responsibility for, and so from time to we have requests from DOC staff to join the project. They do not want to change data or add data. They just want to be able to see what we are doing and of course we are happy for that to happen. We also have some supporters/sponsors of trapping equipment that would like to be able to observe (only). We don’t want them to accidentally change anything, so that’s another use for a true “readonly” member.

So, a type of user as suggested at the start of this thread seems to make perfect sense. The label “Advanced Trapper” doesn’t gel well with giving someone “readonly” access to the data.

Potentially Trap.NZ could make this even more useful by allowing some control over what parts of the project the readonly access would extend to. For example, perhaps see the locations of traps but not the actual trapping records. Or see the trapping records without the precise locations.

Kia ora,

“Trappers” are able to add their own traps to a project. You can read more about member role permissions here:

Kia ora,

The “readonly” role had the exact same permission levels as the current “Advanced Trapper”, we just changed the name of the role to be more descriptive. The “readonly” naming was meant to describe the fact that those members could see all the installations in a project, but only edit ones they’ve added themselves, or that they were assigned to. We realise this was a misleading name, which is partly why we changed the names of the member roles. For more info, see here:

I’m unsure of SeeNoEvil’s needs were met, and our needs are similar.
It would be useful to have a role “Observer” or some such. We have contractors and sponsors who want to view the project, make reports etc, but they do not need to be able to add installations, report catches or baiting data and we do not want them to do that. They should be able to view the installations, count catches, tally up bait use, but not change anything.

A second suggestion is that we can make members “Retired” - so contact details are not lost, in case we need to get back to them to ask about something they have put in place, or so they an be reinstated if they return to the project. Is that a possibility please?
