I am monitoring a new line of 4 victor traps. I have caught a couple rats and a couple mice, but mostly I am just replacing the lures.
I suspect mice are eating the peanut butter before any rats can find it. The lure is gone every night but the traps are not firing.
Would it make sense to remove the rat traps for a bit and replace them with mouse traps to get the mouse numbers down before we go for rats again?
Hi I suggest you go back through old subjects as this and possible solutions has been covered several times before cheers
@filius if your tunnels are long enough, you can always pop a mouse trap or two at the far end. The idea is that the mice will climb over the Victor without setting it off, then go into the mousetrap for a second helping of lure and be caught; the lure for rats then becomes the dead mouse on the far side of the Victor trap. Provided the rats can’t get around the sides of the Victor and still have to walk over the treadle, it’s only the later mice that won’t get trapped.
If you find that you aren’t trapping more mice but the lure keeps getting eaten, try a different lure - slugs, snails, ants, weta, etc. will all have a munch on the peanut butter too, and it can be hard to load up Victors with as much lure as some other traps will take.
