Book recommendation thread

Since there doesn’t seem to be one on the forum already, I thought I’d start off a book recommendation thread.

As a starting point, I’m suggesting that recommendations should be:

  • book-length;
  • on a topic relevant to the interests of this forum;
  • readable/approachable enough for an interested layperson;
  • published either widely or recently enough that members can easily get hold of a copy to read.

Over time, this topic will hopefully accumulate lots and lots of cool book suggestions, so to keep the thread tidy and easy to scroll through, please:

  • include the title and author
  • include a sentence or two about what you liked in this book, or why you’re recommending it
  • use hyperlinks for any more detailed info (e.g. a longer review, publisher’s page with synopsis, free sample chapter if legally available, WorldCat record of library holdings) rather than copy/pasting additional sections of text

If you enjoyed the book too, “like” the recommendation (the :heart: at the bottom right of each post).
If you didn’t enjoy it… we are all different, so add a recommendation about one you did like.
Books that merit a lot of discussion might need their own threads!

Happy reading everyone! :smile: :books: :open_book: :books:

Invasive Predators in New Zealand: Disaster on Four Small Paws, by Carolyn M. King
I found the history of different species introductions really fascinating! It was also very well written - it isn’t often that a book incorporates tertiary-level technical content yet also manages to be a page-turner that’s accessible to the general public.

Cull of the Wild: Killing in the Name of Conservation by Hugh Warwick
A thought-provoking and engaging discussion around ethics in conservation, leavened with plenty of humour. The anecdotal/interview sections are very effective in illustrating how groups with the same conservation goals can still disagree strongly about acceptable methodologies.
