How big should the entrance holes be to allow a feral cat to be comfortable entering a Doc250?
No kiwi ,weka or domestic cats are in the area.
Hi In our network of about 260 of the 250 traps we use the std 80 mm sq entrance and catch almost as many Feral Cats as we do Ferrets, we just don’t advertise the fact as the 250 is not approved for feral cats.
I covered this in other stuff I wrote in tips and Tricks Important to check the actual vertical opening of internal baffle in relation to the Treadle plate when the trap is set, as if you follow the DOC guide lines generally you can get a smallish opening in the Internal baffle, personally for internal baffle if the actual opening is on the small side I have no problem removing one more row of mesh to increase the vertical opening.
It’s actually a very cruel way of dispatching them! - they usually don’t die instantly. Use another trap that meets NAWAC standards for feral cats, or at the very minimum check every morning so you can quickly dispatch a caught cat. We have had a couple caught, even with the standard recommended size mesh. Does the new auto traps meet NAWAC standards?
Hi I should have made it clear that we do not intentionally target feral cats with the 250 traps they are intended for stoats and ferrets, we have an extensive network of Steve Allan Cat traps which do catch some feral cats, they are raised off the ground and ramps used to help protect non targets.
Not much one can do if a Feral Cat wants to force it’s way into the 250 Box, just the same as if one of the species you are trying to protect pushes it’s way into a trap, and all our trap boxes are the longer length to better protect non targets
The AT220 is not approved for feral cats, just possums and ship Rats
again I know people do catch a few feral cats in the AT220,
