Is it possible to enter historic kills in one go? We have been trapping for a few years, but only just started using TrapNZ. Can we create a trap icon in the app, and then give it 50 kills (for example) without having to enter each kill one at a time?
@mike_deal yes you absolutely can! If you go to the Import trap records | Trap.NZ page of your project, you’ll see some instructions for how to set up a spreadsheet where you can import all your data for the project in one hit (I don’t think there’s an upper limit to the number of records, anyway…).
If you haven’t already set up all your traps (and bait stations, and tracking tunnels, etc. etc.), you can also Import traps | Trap.NZ as a spreadsheet if you have all the trap info in a spreadsheet with the columns named as per the guidelines.
For some reason, the main Help page on TrapNZ is giving me an error right now, so I’ll just mention the one glitch I hit on my first go at importing - after saving my Excel spreadsheet in csv format, I needed to then open it using Notepad in order to save it in UTF-8 encoding. If you are computer savvy and know what encoding your csv file defaults to, you can import it as that and skip the re-save step, but if not, this is the easiest way I know of to get a spreadsheet from Excel to TrapNZ.
If you have any issues with getting historic data to match with the spreadsheet format, there are some workarounds you can use. One project I’m involved in added “not recorded” as a lure type (you do this by going to your Project page, then clicking Project Categories and adding a Trap Bait Type). If you have aggregated trapping data (e.g. Trap 5 caught 3 rats in March, or 15 rats over 2024), you can change the default “strike” number from 1 animal to however many you want, and then use, say, the first of each month or year as the catch date.
Any hiccups, just post again - there’s a lot of info on the Help page and old forum posts, but every project has its own quirks and it can also take a bit of time to figure out terminology differences between TrapNZ and local usage!
I have just contacted the developers and hopefully we have it back up soon. Apparently the server the help section is on was updated yesterday
