Including backyard trappers in our area who do not wish to be part of our project

I am an administrator for Predator Free Napier Hill. If households in our area (Napier Hill) who are trapping, have been for a substantially long time and intend to carry on doing so, do not wish to be part of our trapping group (Predator Free Napier Hill) - is it possible, and a good idea, to record their location (if they agree) on Trap NZ? This would help us decide where to actively look for new trappers to cover the area with the limited resources we have.

Hi, they are probably the type of trapper you want as part of your project, as they are likely to be highly motivated (like you), so will stick at it. While many other households may join, but give up. So, try to involve them if you can, and add to your catch statistics, which could help encourage others to join your project. Good luck.

@g_offergeld, the Area tool on the new Design tool of the website lets you turn a land parcel into an area and record info like landowner details, consent given or not given, etc. The Design tool is still in beta testing, so not everything has a help page yet, but if you follow just the first part of the “adding installations” instructions (up to saving), this might do what you want.

@lenore-admin also shared some great tips for facilitating backyard trappers to record data on TrapNZ at a recent workshop, such as printing out a QR code that trappers can keep on their fridge and when scanned it takes them straight to their data entry page, so all they have to do is record their catches/checks and hit save.

Some trappers might just not want their location to be visible to others (e.g. some people have concerns about vandalism/theft if others know where their traps are). If you only have Trappers and a few Admins in your group, this won’t be an issue, but some groups have lots of Advanced Trappers/Managers who can see all trap locations.

Thank you so much for your super helpful replies.

You could add a “point of interest”, which would at least give you visual clues as to there being a/some/many traps at that point. POI also can be an polygon, so you could even get an idea of the area that is privately trapped

Thanks. These replies are greatly appreciated
