Some potential improvements for the doc series traps

Hi, I’m new here. Always loved birds so I thought I’d help in what way I can.

Here’s some ideas to potentially make life easier, I haven’t made any prototypes, just designed some improvements, without the ideal software, anyway we make do.

I’ve held onto these ideas too long thinking this could be a product to sell and it very well could be but I would rather put it out for anyone to make or as the basis for their own foot setting mechanisms/safety improvement. Our native wildlife is more important than any potential financial gain.

I’m thinking you would probably want to add a clip to ensure the foot pedal and clip that goes over the box remain as one piece of kit, not two. as shown by the black brushwork lol.

Also I’ve taken liberties with the cord length to match the image. it would obviously need to be long enough to reach the trap in it’s downward position and ideally the height of the box will be sufficient enough height to stand on the “foot pedal” and when it reaches the ground or before, the trap has been pulled up and set. this downward pressure on the trap is likely going to naturally want to turn the box over towards the direction your putting pressure on so might need to put a bit of wood or more elegant solution under the box, maybe another width of the box under the pedal side, so when you put your foot down it’s got the strong base required for it not to tip.

I don’t have a trap to see if any of this would work but in theory it should. I don’t know how powerful the springs are either so it might be better to have these safety clips on either side so it doesn’t put too much pressure on the connection points. or combine them as one thing.

Nice.

I’ve used a flat head nail through a loose fit hole in the side wall of the trap - then head bent into the hook - to do a similar thing to your hook. It works very well - obviously puts pressure on the mounting bolts but they hold up.

I gave up on that idea when these came along as they solve a number of other problems too:
