Trapinator sprung but no catch

Hi, we (Doubtless Conservation Trust) have about 100 Trapinators in the Lewis Pass area. I am finding a lot (up to 1/3) are being tripped but nothing in them. I notice that the red plastic setting handle is often chewed (see the photo) so think that maybe possums are biting the handle and setting them off. Has anyone else come across this? I wonder if removing the red plastic handle will reduce or solve the problem?

My first thought is that it’s rats.

They are chewing the handle because you have lure (or at least the smell of it?) on your hands when setting the trap after luring it?
