I have had a few occasions where all that is left in the trap (that has been sprung) is a mouse tail. The trap has also been dragged along inside the box to the entrance.
Has the mouse managed to lose its tail and escape or has something else come along and eaten the mouse (leaving the tail behind)?
Any ideas?
Rats like to eat mice and the tail is left over.
Probably predation, rats, hedgehogs, even the odd blackbird or weka will move in on a bit of tasty easily positioned carrion.
I have recorded feral cats pulling rats out of Vic traps.
Experimenting with bending the leftover wires at the entrance to point to the back of the trap to try and snag the rat.
They get pretty vicious and drag box around.
Seen a few othe Vics where trap has fired but no kill. Suspect same cat is working up and down my traplines.
I know what the like to eat now tho.
